Summer Dream

Hiking

Start hiking right outside the door
Put on your hiking boots and head straight from the cabin into nature.
From the starting point at 1,400 meters above sea level, you can reach peaks like Gilfert, Kellerjoch, Arbeser, Gamsstein, or Gratzenkopf and enjoy the fresh mountain air. For circular hikes, we recommend routes around the Kuhmesser or the Sonntagsköpfl.

Good to know
At the cabin, you'll find hiking poles, a backpack, hiking and biking maps with tips, a headlamp, and a thermos — everything ready for your tours.

The Kellerjochbahn is just 1.2 km away and takes you up to nearly 2,000 meters.
Here’s the link to the Kellerjochbahn’s summer operating times.

A short loop from the cabin: The "Weg der Sinne" (Path of the Senses) – a great intro to Hochpillberg:

The Weg der Sinne is well signposted with yellow signs. It’s a leisurely circular walk of about 1.5 hours that stimulates all the senses — packed with beautiful art installations and natural experiences. Easily doable in all weather.

Our personal hiking tip from the cabin: the “Annapurna Loop”:

Waldhütte (1400m) - Naunz Niederleger (1600m)  - Naunz Hochleger (1850m)  - Kellerjochhütte (2200m)  - Gartalm (1600m) – Gamssteinhaus (1700m)  - Loashütte (1650m)  - Loasweg - Hoferweg – Waldhütte (1400m)  (approx. 5–6 hours)

For more mountain, alpine farm, and mountain lodge hikes, check the interactive map for Pillberg or Loassattel. We’re also happy to give personal recommendations on-site.

Biking

Our Silberregion Karwendel offers a wide range of biking options for all skill levels. We also recommend the “bike and hike” combo starting from the cabin.

Good to know:
At the cabin, you'll find a backpack, biking maps with tips, a headlamp, and a thermos. E-bike rentals are available at the Biohotel Grafenast on Hochpillberg (1.2 km away) or in the valley in Schwaz at the info office.

Our personal bike & hike tip from the cabin:
Bike to the Loassattel and hike to the Kleiner or Großer Gamsstein or Gilfert. Then enjoy a relaxed ride back down.

Winter Magic

Step out the door and into the snow...

At 1,400 meters above sea level, the Waldhütte is the perfect starting point for winter adventures. Head out directly for snowshoe hikes, tobogganing (just 200 m to the toboggan run), ski tours, or days on the slopes.

A special winter experience already awaits during your arrival at the cabin. With your gear on an expedition sled (pulka), you walk the final 950 meters from the parking lot through a snow-covered winter forest. This unique approach sets the tone for an emotional winter getaway and lets you experience nature up close from the very beginning!

    Tobogganing

Natural Toboggan fun for the whole family
The Loasweg (forest road to the Loas guesthouse) offers a relaxed toboggan run — ideal for families — and is easily accessible from the cabin. You can ride down anytime or hike to the Loashütte (about 1 hour on foot), stop for a bite, and ride back.

For experienced tobogganers, there’s a more challenging run near the ski area. Take the Kellerjochbahn to the mountain station and the Hecherhaus guesthouse. From there, a 4 km track with 14 curves leads down to the Grafenast lift station.

A special highlight: When snow conditions are good, the toboggan run can be extended all the way down to Schwaz in the valley (9 km total), and you can take the bus back up.

    Alpin Skiing

Just 1.2 km from the cabin lies the small, charming “Kellerjoch” ski area. It offers family-friendly, sunny slopes up to about 1,900 meters. A ski school is also available at Hotel Frieden — perfect for beginners and families.

    Good to know:
At the Kellerjochbahn station, you'll find high-quality ski rentals, ski service, and convenient ski lockers. Book your rental gear online to save time on-site and receive a 10% online booking discount!

If you're looking for larger ski areas, you can explore the vibrant Zillertal. For example, the “Hochzillertal” ski area in Kaltenbach is about a 45-minute drive away and offers expansive slopes and modern facilities.

    Snowshoeing

Just like the trappers (North American hunters and trappers), you can explore the magical winter landscape on snowshoes. The best part: snowshoes, poles, and sleds (for combo tours) are available at the cabin — just grab them and go!

    Our winter hiking experience tip:
    Our marked favorite loop:
    Waldhütte (1,400m) – Naunz Niederleger (1,600m) – Galterer Weg – Loasweg – Hoferweg – Waldhütte
Duration: approx. 2–3 hours, 250 meters elevation gain

    Ski Touring

A winter paradise for ski tour enthusiasts:
The Waldhütte is the perfect base for ski tours in the untouched mountains of the Tux Alps. You can start right from the front door and enjoy the full beauty of the snowy landscape. Whether you’re a relaxed beginner or looking for a challenging route — you’ll find something to suit you here.

    • Kleiner Gamsstein
    • Sonntagsköpfl
    • Kellerjochhütte (unmanaged in winter — can also be reached with ascent aid)
    • Ski slope tour to the Hecherhaus / Kellerjochbahn: permitted daily at the edge of the piste and even in the evening on Thursdays.

    Sightseeing

Especially in snow-free months, outings and cultural visits are very popular with guests of the Waldhütte. Our personal tips in the Silberregion Karwendel:

    • Your Dome: Right next to the mine — experience impressive films in a modern 360-degree cinema.

    • Tratzberg Castle: A family-friendly destination — the interactive tour is great fun for kids too.

    • Wolfsklamm Gorge: Roaring waterfalls, emerald water, and 354 steps across wooden bridges make this gorge an unforgettable natural experience.

    • Historic railways: The nostalgic Achensee cogwheel steam train and the Zillertalbahn are favorites among rail enthusiasts.

    • Old Town Schwaz: Stroll through charming alleys, enjoy a coffee, and discover the rich history of this remarkable town.
